Cocooning and lockdown have a lot to answer for! Immobility and reduced mobility that have come hand in hand with this awful Covid virus have had devastating impacts on increasing fragility in our older populations.
One body structure that reacts really badly to reduced mobility is our tendons. A tendon is how a muscle connects to bone. They need to be constantly loaded to stay strong.
Following a period of reduced movements it is really common to see our tendons get overloaded by what used to be normal for us. In the leg, common examples of this would be heel (achilles) pain and lateral or outside of hip pain.
So if you or your mum or granny or uncle are suddenly complaining of a stiff, achy hip dont just presume its arthritis. It's really possible it is a tendinopathy or a tendon suddenly finding what used to be normal as too much. This side of the hip pain is particularly prevalent in post menopausal woman, so bear that in mind too.
Tendons unfortunately do not get better with time, or massage, or machines. They need a guided rehab program under a knowledgeable professional.
So dont just ask the pain as getting older, get assessed and hopefully sorted!
